Meet Frank, Head Trainer.

Hi, I'm Frank Zhirnov. I started my dog training career after meeting the therapy dogs that came to campus after the UCC shooting. Meeting such great and loving dogs made me realize that my purpose in life was to nurture our bond with man's best friend.

Shortly after, I got a job at Petco as a professional dog trainer. I worked there for a few years until I was let go during COVID. That's when I took a leap of faith and started Frankly Dog Training.

It was one of the best decisions I ever made. Dog training is my dream-come-true, and I'm truly grateful for all the wonderful people and pups who come my way.

- Frank Zhirnov, mother, wife, homesteader, and dog trainer.

Our Secret Formula

After a decade training dogs across Western Oregon, the most powerful thing I've learned is this: most reactivity comes from fear, not malice.

When a dog growls or lashes out, their nervous system is in survival mode. A dog overwhelmed by fear can't make the right decisions.

To change how your dog behaves, you first have to change how they think. Our system builds emotional control and focus through four essential pillars: routine, commands, socialization, and leadership.

01

Routine

A consistent daily rhythm makes your dog receptive to learning by reducing stress.

02

Commands

Clear, rehearsed commands give your dog's brain something else to focus on around triggers.

03

Socialization

When your dog is ready, gradual socialization makes meeting other dogs and people fun.

04

Leadership

We teach you to easily handle your dog like an expert, boosting their confidence and reducing fear.

A private, home-style training retreat.

Your dog stays on our private homestead, fully integrated into our daily routine. Unlike loud, high-stress commercial facilities, our dedicated training crates and setups are located right inside our home where we live. This allows us to seamlessly blend intensive, real-world training with structured, quiet rest under our own roof.
Over six weeks, your dog enjoys an active life with open space, friendships on the farm and personal care. That gives us the time to truly change their habits in a safe, home environment.

You won't miss a thing.

Six weeks is a commitment, but you are never left in the dark. We treat your dog like family, and we keep you connected every step of the way.

Updates straight to your phone

  • Photos and videos of your dog’s actual training sessions, so you can watch their progress and see the exact methods we are using.
  • A phone call every week to catch you up on how your dog is doing and what we're working on.
  • A scheduled video call so you can see them happy, relaxed, and working in real-time.

About visits: one visit midway through is possible if you really need it, but we gently recommend the video call instead. Seeing you leave again can be confusing for a dog in the middle of their training.

Will my dog forget me or be mad at me?

Never. A dog’s bond with their owner is permanent, deep, and based on true safety. They won't hold a grudge or resent you for this time apart. While they are busy working hard and learning new skills with us, they will be absolutely thrilled to see you at graduation.

What will happen to our bond?

It will actually get stronger. True bonding doesn't come from managing daily chaos. It comes from clarity and mutual trust. By giving your dog the space to learn emotional regulation, you aren't damaging your relationship; you are giving them the tools to finally enjoy life by your side without fear.

Your dog isn't broken, just scared.

Most reactivity starts with fear. Tell me what's going on, and I'll get to the bottom of what's causing your dog's unwanted behaviors. Tap the button below and answer 4 quick questions so I get a clear picture.

This isn't your average boarding program.

Six weeks of intensive training and real-life practice built entirely around your dog. Includes a pickup-day lesson and two in-home follow-up lessons to help the changes last.

Training built for your dog

Individualized daily training shaped around your dog's unique personality, needs, and reactivity challenges. We master the essential foundations first, then systematically tackle their biggest triggers.

Manners in public

From parks to retail stores, your dog practices the everyday skills needed to navigate the world calmly. We focus heavily on neutral behavior in areas that previously caused intense reactions.

Socialization that builds confidence

As your dog becomes ready, we curate positive, controlled exposure to new people, places, and other dogs. These structured experiences turn intimidating situations into neutral, stress-free moments.

Training that comes home

Your dog proof-tests their new skills with several trusted handlers on our team. Generalizing their obedience ensures they listen reliably to anyone holding the leash when they return to you.

Hands-on pickup day lesson

Before heading home, we show you exactly what your dog has mastered. We walk you through hands-on handling techniques so you feel confident and capable from day one.

Two included in-home lessons

We come directly to your house for two lessons. We help fit the training into your personal daily routine and work through real-world challenges right in your own neighborhood.

Frank is a wonderful patient dog trainer. I have a cane corso mastiff and believe me you have to have patience when working with this breed. I can’t say enough about what she has done to get Duke obedience trained and socialized. Duke loves her and her dogs she brings them over sometimes for dog play and dog interaction. She works on any problems you might have with your dog in a very loving but all business way. I know you and your dog would have a vary good experience with Frank as your trainer.

Balanced training, discussed with you first.

We train the dog in front of us and collaborate with you before any training begins. Depending on your dog’s specific needs and what you approve, our tools may include slip leads, muzzles, prong collars, e-collars, or protective safety gear.
When introducing e-collars, we always begin with low-level vibration before any electronic stimulation. Tools support the work. Real rehabilitation is built on trust, repetition, clear structure and gradual exposure.

Is this program for dogs with a bite history?

Tell us exactly what happened in the application, including whether skin was broken. Frank reviews the details before deciding whether the six-week program may be a fit. Not every dog or situation is accepted.

Where does my dog stay?

Your dog stays with Frank during the six-week program. Before you reserve a spot, Frank explains the living setup and any case-specific safety arrangements so you know what to expect.

How are introductions to other dogs handled?

Whether dog-to-dog work is appropriate depends on the individual dog. Frank discusses that decision and the plan with you before it is part of the program.

What training tools do you use?

Tools are not a one-size-fits-all decision. Frank explains what she recommends for your dog and why, and discusses it with you before the program begins.

What happens if my dog needs medical care?

Frank reviews the medical-emergency plan and veterinarian arrangements with you before enrollment. Any dog with ongoing medical needs should be discussed before a spot is reserved.

How will the training transfer home?

The program includes three lessons for the people who will handle your dog: one at our home on pickup day, then two at your home. You'll practice the same cues and routines Frank used so everyone can be consistent at home.

Will I receive updates?

Yes. Frank sends weekly photo and video updates during the six-week program.

When is the next opening?

We're booking October now. We only take four dogs at a time and dogs start on a rolling basis, so your start date depends on when a spot opens. Once a month fills, the next openings are about six weeks out. Fill out the four-question application and Frank will call you with real dates.

You don't have to figure this out alone.

Tell us what has been happening with your dog. Frank will review the details and see whether the six-week program may be a fit.
