Your dog isn't broken, just scared.

Hi, my name is Frank Zhirnov, and the #1 thing I've learned from serving as Douglas County's trusted dog trainer for over 10 years is this: most dogs misbehave out of fear, not malice.

That's why we believe that every dog deserves a second chance, and that helping them comes down to building these four things:

🐾 Routine: [routine helps them feel secure and in-control]

🐾 Commands: [commands help calm in trigger situations]

🐾 Friendships: [meeting new dogs and people = not so scary]

🐾 Confidence: [with tools they need, they can know that they dont have to freak out]

[thats what our program is about]

What is a board-and-train?

Here's the honest truth: you can't do everything your dog needs with a weekly lesson. Chances are, they'll go back to old habits between sessions. Real change comes from doing the right thing every day until the calm version of your dog becomes the only version they know.

That's exactly what my board-and-train is for. For six weeks, your dog lives with me and my pack. We train five days a week, and learning becomes part of our lifestyle. [Meals, walks, play times, going into public, and meeting new friends is part of it].

My program works because I start your dog where they can succeed, then get a little closer to the things that scare them until their fear turns into confidence. We rinse and repeat until the trigger that used to set them off is just another boring part of the day. You can't cram that into a weekend, but six weeks of it, done right, sends home a different dog.

And you are never out of the loop. You get weekly updates with pictures and videos, and when your dog comes home, I show YOU how to keep it going. [2 free lessons included]. Because the goal was never a dog that only listens to me. It's a dog that is finally calm and happy in your home, with you.

As a rescue who has rescued many dogs from bad situations, I have worked with Frank for a couple of years now, with Frank helping to rehabilitate many of our fearful, fear-aggressive, traumatized and reactive dogs. Frank has helped us change not only the bad behaviors of these dogs but their future, so that these dogs were able to become highly adoptable and receive successful placements in forever families.

I cannot say enough good things about Frank and our whole experience! My husband was skeptical that a month of training would help — our lab didn't come to her name and would run the woods behind our house like a wild beast. I joked that the wrong dog was returned to me! Remi is so happy to obey now, comes when she's called, and is more responsive to commands than ever. She's barely 18 months old, and we could tell she loved Frank and his family. It felt so great sending our beloved pup somewhere that made her feel at home. We had such a beautiful experience.

We are thrilled to share Bear's remarkable transformation with Frankly Dog Training! It's evident their expertise has made a significant impact on Bear's confidence, social skills and behavior. The regular updates, including pictures and videos, show a commitment to keeping clients informed of training progress. Bear now walks with confidence, responds to calls, socializes with animals and has shown positive growth. Our decision to continue training with Frank and board Bear when we are out of town shows the trust and satisfaction we've gained from his caring training.

Daisy did a month-long Board and Train with Frank over the holiday season. Before getting started, Daisy did an evaluation and we talked about what to expect and what follow up could look like. Frank provided regular phone updates, pictures, and videos on Daisy's progress. I was contacted with any questions and felt like my feedback was valued. Frank also offered for me to come to the home and view Daisy in training. Daisy's goal was to become a partner in a therapy office and she has done great on her trial runs — she follows all directions even with distractions. This is far beyond where she was before meeting Frank! Frank has followed up multiple times since Daisy came home to share resources and schedule follow ups. Kind, attentive, and clearly knowledgeable in training and canine behavior.

Frank is a wonderful, patient dog trainer. I have a cane corso mastiff, and believe me, you have to have patience with this breed. I can't say enough about what she's done to get Duke obedience trained and socialized. Duke loves her, and she brings her dogs over sometimes for play and interaction. She works on any problems you have in a very loving but all-business way. I know you and your dog would have a very good experience with Frank as your trainer.

Our one-year-old was a controlling heeler who had hurt one of her siblings. Frank made just the right corrections and showed us how to guide her better — now she's controlled and listening! Highly recommend!

We've been training with Frank since our lab was 14 weeks old — he's now almost 2 and a service dog in training for my husband. Frank is amazing: always encouraging and problem-solving. We never could have gotten this far without him.

I initially had Frank's help with a few fosters, so when I decided to buy my first Belgian Malinois I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing training it. Frank was very patient with both me and my mal and knew exactly how to help me teach my puppy any trick I wanted. Any time I had bad behavior that needed to be trained out, Frank was there every step of the way. Now, four years later, my Malinois is one of the best trained dogs I have ever seen. We get compliments everywhere we go. I could not be happier with Frankly Dog Training. We even just returned to continue my Echo's training into protection. Absolutely amazing trainer and company.

Frank did a temperament test on my Luci recently to see if he'd make a good fit to be my Service Dog, and let me tell you, Frank made my heart sing when he said Luci would make a great SD. Luci is only a little over 6 months old and is my first future SD, so it was imperative he succeed at not just the temperament test, but the training. Frank's testing of recall, response to loud noises, people walking or biking by, retrieval, response to touch, commands, and more was met with success. With your help, I know Luci and I will be a great team. I highly recommend you to anyone that needs dog training.

Frank helped me determine if my husky's temperament was right to begin training for service dog work. After deciding Leia had the right temperament and intelligence, he helped me train her into a wonderful service dog for my own disabling condition. Leia is trained or in training to perform tactile stimulation, deep pressure therapy, blocking/covers, symptom alerts, and compulsive behavior interruption. Frank remains available for consultation about training issues and questions. In Frank, I have gained not only a great trainer and consultant but a truly supportive and caring friend. I can't speak highly enough of him.

I absolutely love her training! She does so well at explaining and coaching us on how to handle our dog, and made significant progress with her in just 4 sessions. She's very patient and understanding — super helpful when it comes to a high-functioning dog!

Frank was a phenomenal help when we inherited a spirited 9-month-old pup after our daughter moved to Alaska. She asked what we wanted and what our goal was for Loki. We wanted to get him to walk and not pull anyone over or yank an arm out of the leash. A few weeks later we had a dog that didn't pull, listened to commands, and is now a well-mannered lil man. Frank gave us the skills and tools needed to get him where we needed to be. Thank you very much!

First, I have written maybe two reviews in my life, but I have to for Frankly. Frank works amazing in our home with our stubborn Chow Chow puppies. We've had Chows for years. The first visit, Frank had them listening to commands. Honestly, I was shocked, as Chows listen when they want to. We have training in our home every other week and have seen major improvement, even going on field trips to socialize the boys. This is what we should have done years ago with our other Chows. I highly recommend Frankly!

Common Questions

Where does my dog stay?
Right in my home and out on my 5-acre ranch, with me and the rest of the pack. I don't believe in kenneling a dog all day. The reason why is because real change happens in real life: around people, around other dogs, out in the world. Your dog gets to live like one of my own.
Does my dog get attention?
A ton. Your dog trains 5 days a week and is right in the middle of the pack with me every single day, not stuck off on their own. Morning to night, they're part of everything we do.
Will I get updates while my dog is with you?
Absolutely! I send weekly updates with pictures and videos so you can watch your dog's progress the whole way through. You're part of this too, and I want you to see every win along the way.
What will my dog do?
A whole lot! We train 5 days a week, get out in public, and visit stores, so your dog learns to behave inside the house and out in the world. They'll play with my trusted dogs and meet other trainers. The reason why we do so much is because your dog has to learn to handle the whole world, not just your backyard.
How long is the program?
Six weeks. I know everybody wants a quick fix, but six weeks is what it really takes to get this right and send your dog home with changes that stick. Take your time, and we'll do it right.
